Testosterone is thought by many to be the most important sex hormone produced in the male body. It is the hormone that is primarily responsible for producing the typical adult male attributes. At puberty, testosterone stimulates the physical changes that characterize the adult male, such as enlargement of the penis and testes, growth of facial and pubic hair, deepening of the voice, an increase in muscle mass and strength, and growth in height. Throughout adult life, testosterone helps maintain sex drive, the production of sperm cells, male hair patterns, muscle mass and bone mass. Physical Symptoms of Low Testosterone Signs of low testosterone in men may include decreased morning erection and sex drive, erectile dysfunction (ED), reduction in muscle mass, strength, endurance and aerobic capacity with an increase fat accumulation. Diagnosing Low Testosterone Physical and/or emotional symptoms may suggest, and can be confused with other medical problems. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is defined as the inability to gain or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. ED affects men of all ages and can occur for many different reasons. Medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes or prostate issues can contribute to ED. If you suspect ED may affect you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist today. While ED can be a difficult issue to deal with, there are a number of treatment options available. Oral tablets, such as Viagra and Levitra, are available by prescription. Other options include: urethral suppositories, vacuum erection devices (VEDs), surgical implantation. It is best to consult with your doctor or pharmacist to find out which option might be best for you. For some men, if the oral tablets do not work and the surgical option is too invasive, they try another option – penile injection therapy. |
Another option for men with erectile dysfunction (ED) is penile injection therapy. The therapy is designed to help gain and maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. With this type of therapy, medication is (self) injected into the "spongy tissue" of the penis using a small, thin needle. Our pharmacists are here to help through the process, offering education on how to properly inject prior to the start of treatment. With a small amount of practice, many patients find the injection quite easy and painless. With this type of therapy, we feel that it is of the utmost importance to build a strong relationship with our patients and their prescribers. Supporting the patient via consultation and follow-up is integral to the success of this therapy. We take pride in providing Medication Therapy Management (MTM) services for this therapy. Our Men’s Health Pharmacist is trained to help answer any questions patients and providers may have throughout the process. We offer many different strengths and mixes of intracavernosal injection (ICI) therapy. From single component Alprostadil to multi-component Bi-Mix and Tri-Mix, we are committed to helping the patient find the right mix. If you are a patient considering penile injection therapy, we will be happy to discuss treatment options with you or your doctor. |
